Leo, a Jew, is left to fend for himself, hiding from the Nazis. Fast forward 70 years. A teenage girl, also named Alma (Sophie Nélisse), is struggling with love. She has a crush on a boy, and he seems to like her, but she pushes him away, afraid he’ll think she’s easy. Confused, he backs off. She worries that love only exists in books, but not in real life. However, Leo (Derek Jacobi), now an old man living in America, still dreams of his Alma from years earlier.
