After Franny’s (Anne Hathaway) musician brother Henry (Ben Rosenfield) is injured in a car accident and winds up in a hospital in a coma, she returns home after a long estrangement and reads his notebook to find out what his life was like while she was gone. Franny searches out the musicians and artists Henry loves, and in the course of her journey meets his musical idol James Forester (Johnny Flynn), who turns out to be a shy, private man, in spite of his fame and success. A strong romantic connection develops between Franny and James.
